Advice on playing leads
September 16, 2009 1:55:52 AM UTC Post #1

I need advice how to play fast and creative leads. I've tried practicing me scales and everything else but nothing seems to work. I asked my guitar teacher and he told me to try alternate picking my scales and stuff.

Learn a few songs leads and take elements from them....then construct one from the amassed licks in key...

Know your Modes (Aeolian, Dorian) etc.
Practice;
alternate picking;
play 12 hours a day;
and don't just shred, actually put melody in what you write.

I personally can't shred by picking everynote, I usually hammer on and pull of nearly everything, and can get quite a shreddy sound to it.

that whole 12 hours thing....not necessary unless it's all you like to do....I would only recommend that to anti-social people

Or John Petrucci, so that he can continue playing 5 billion notes a second without breaking a sweat, but breaking the necks of small children and livestock.good point....petrucci pwns

Petrucci doesn't just own... He slays many innocent lives.
Use technique too, don't stick to just scales. Do some small sweeps, incorperate some 3rd harmonies, do some string skipping,use a little legato... blah blah blah blah

The Five Venoms -- local melbourne band....some of the best guitar work i've ever seen! Amazing solos with incredible technical work! The guy had been playing guitar for 3 years!!! I asked him, what's your secret? And he said, classical piano music is the way to go! :wink:
It's true. I've been playing piano for 14 years. The degree of technicality and finger work is EXTREMELY advanced! So get yourself some Beethoven and play along!

Theory is a great thing to learn, but I only apply it where I need it. (if I'm jamming on jazz, or with my shred-head friends, and we want to make something cooky). In my band/my own compositions, I do everything simply by ear. Rely on nothing mmore then your melodic sense, and you will be fine.
Practice hours on end, and make sure you play with taste. Thats what people lack these days, taste. Theres no originality, at all.
