Alt picking like light to the flies

Hi, i was just wondering how you people alt pick like light to the flies. On which string do you do the up pick?
I do it like this:
down - ............... - down
.........up - down ..............
but i can't make it go as fast as it is on the cd. Is my method wrong or do I just need more practice?

Your method is probably personally suited to you. Just practice with a metronome until you get it up to speed i guess!

i play it like this:
up-------------------up-------------------up
-----down---down-------down---down
i find that way the most efficient to play pedal riffs like that and it gets the best speed

Im a man for the down picking. The best song i can play for that awesome down picking sound has got to be Disposable Heros by Metallica. One of the greatest. People hyper about James' down picking in that song so much, they should, but i know of a certain band who do it better. SEPULTURA!!!!!
I know loads of people that dont like down picking at all and i just dont get it. Its bloody awesome.

Metallica uses alot downpicking yeah. That riff is originally played downpicking i think. I play it also downpicking...i find it to sound the best.

I agree with alot of people who have replied to oringal topic, you can just Down pick it all for sakes of speed..but i suggest alternate picking wither Up down or down up, just for the sake of getting that down to the point of alternate picking fast..So work with a metronome and just do what is the most comfortable.

Well, I suppose , yeah
but I think there are better Alt picking exercises for picking up speed in that department
and same for accuraccy

It may not just be the case that your picking is at fault, but the synchronisation of your left and right hand. You have to get the correct muscle memory into your left hand in order to become comfortable with playing passages or riffs at the target speed, and perhaps even above the target speed. Concentrate on the beat and the value of each note on the lick you're attempting so that you can play the piece eventually without hardly even thinking about it. So, practise the pattern at a lower speed for a while and continue working on it until you feel comfortable enough to bring it back up to speed. This technique will not only help you to play through this passage or song more fluidly, but may also expose flaws in your technique, and force you to work on them, or find new ways to play similar passages.
