Jeez so much backlash to an honest question, it's perfectly acceptable to compare albums, especially when the albums are in the same general genre of music, It's also seems kinda hypocritical the stances here, that when it was say movies like in the star wars and lord of the rings thread two vastly different movies but in the same fantasy/sci fi world it was perfectly okay to compare them, but then there's this stance of not comparing music? It's the same situation with different products in the wording.
Now as for my comparison of the two albums, personally I think Shogun is a much stronger album and I found the Metallica album to be a disappointment (as expected) I'd say the songs on Shogun are better crafted, show more skill and creativity, and definitely don't drag on as I found Death Magnetic to do, Also I'd take any single one of Heafy's melodies on this album compared to that fucking chorus of Cyanide (I swear that is the most annoying melody and stupid wording I think I've ever heard) or anything else they do on that album.

My opinion is kind of void because I haven't even bothered listening to Death Magnetic, but I've heard the radio tracks, 3 of em I think.  And in all honesty, it's what I expected of Metallica.  They're not angry or aggressive anymore, and to me that was a key ingredient of what made Metallica so amazing back in the late 80's.

At this point in the year you really can't compare any album with any album, in my opinion. This year has just been so crazy with every band releasing amazing albums. Every band has become so connected with releasing albums either downloaded over the internet, albums with special additions, albums that come with free t-shirts or autographed photos. Every special addition even comes with making of the album DVDs. Not too mention utterly free albums. What it comes down too I think is the order in which each album is released. Weeks and months from now Shogun will be compared with the new Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Korn, and maybe even another Metallica album and by that time Shogun will be old school.
Anyway... enough rambling, since this is my first post here in a while I will say that Shogun is definatly an impressive piece of art and I can't wait for the next piece by Trivium. ...Hope their tour brings them to New Orleans too!@  ;D
