I see a bunch of band threads but like.. lets discuss one specific genre. Ok.. whose into death metal.. I mean, really appreciates it. What are people's favourite bands. Favourite subgenres. What they love about it. Death metal is my passion. Theres something about that raw, powerful physical high speed music that is precise yet chaotic, powerful yet controllable. Dangerous yet pleasing. Great death metal bands imo aint measure by their years on the scene, although it helps! It's about staying true to the music. Never giving into the mainstream. Doing things differently always. Pushing the boundaries of music. I mean, death metal, real death metal has given the music world so much. Death growls, blastbeats, beats per minutes that are over 200bpm, a voice for the anti-religious. A way to release anger and hatred and filth and disgust without hurting anyone. A chance to go fucking nuts. The best death metal band ever has definetly got to be the original death metal band. Death. Chuck's visions. His way of thinking. The way no two Death albums sounded the same. The timeless heaviness and brutality of Scream Bloody Gore, Human, Leprosy. He never gave up, never gave in. Even in the face of death. I think the other greatest DM bands are definetly the ones everyone knows. Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Obituary, Deicide, Carcass, Nile, Cryptopsy, Entombed, Dismember. These are the greats. Of course there are the others one that not everyone knows but need to be known. Decapitated, Necrophagist, Devourment, Skinless, Malevolent Creation, Immolation, Dying Fetus, Cephalic Carnage, Akercocke, Aborted, Vital Remains, Zyklon, Behemoth, Kataklysm,Beneath The Massacre, NEVERMORE, Dark Tranquility, even In Flames and At the Gates. If I forgotten any.. Im so sorry. But yeah... death metal, my passion. Some people cant handle the more extreme stuff. Like grindcore to a lot of people will seem like noise. But to me, grindcore is uncontrolled rage. Directed and chaotic yet meaningful. Yes, I think grindcore is meaningful. I mean, the speed at which You Suffer comes and goes, you cant deny, says it all really "YOUSUFFERBUTWHY?" Slam death metal though, man that shit really pushes the speed limits sometimes. Insane drumming, really sick guitar grooves done with speed and such inhuman gutteral vocals. Technical death metal and I dont just mean Necrophagist can be some of the most amazing music ever heard. And I need to get some Cynic which I just remembered. But yeah, get some Spawn of Possession. That shit IS TECHNICAL! It can be a lil hard to follow some times as they will do a riff in seconds do another one and like, technical death makes good use of jazz drumming and even jazz guitar to keep up with the crazy rhythms. You aint techdeath if your drumming is just blasting XD It needs some crazy ass fills too. Melodic death metal. Ive heard people say it's become generic lately. But thats just the lazy fuckers who it generic. XD Theres some amazing bands like INSOMNIUM. If you like In Flames (early In Flames) Insomnium is like that.. but better! K. Im getting tired. That first post should be enough to start the fire going. DEATH METAL PEOPLE... KEEP IT BRUTAL! lol (and melodic too if you can. I love melodic death and brutal death.. but if you mix it together like Vehemence did... true love for me )

The original Death Metal band was POSSESSED. You err in quite a few areas here. Death Metal is derivative of Thrash. Blast beats, guttural growling, and anti-religious sentiments are not indigenous to Death Metal. As with its predecessor, Thrash, Death Metal was very much influenced by Hardcore and the genres which were derivative of Hardcore Punk. Blast beats go back to Napalm Death. Guttural vocals appeared in Powerviolence and Crust Punk some time before Death Metal bands of the late 80s and early 90s began using them, whereas your DM bands circa 1985 - 1988 (such as Possessed, Incubus [now known as Opprobrium], Graf Spee, early Sepultura, etc.) tended to use either a more screaming style vocal (Possessed, Death, etc.), or a more harsh toned variation of traditional vocal styles (Sepultura, Incubus, etc.). As for occultism in music, references can be found way back in the Delta Blues scene, with both of the Johnsons (Robert Johnson and Tommy Johnson) having both been alleged to have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for their musical abilities. The occult references are particularly prominent in the works of Robert Johnson, namely, his legendary "Hellhound On My Trail". Occult references would appear again throughout the history of Rock, particularly in the 60s (The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc), but the first Rock album to actually sing praise of demonic entities and forces would be the Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls from the 'Acid Rock' band Coven (1969). They would be followed closely by Prog Rock legends Black Widow, with their classic album Sacrifice (1970). As far as Metal goes, such motifs didn't appear until well into the NWoBHM scene, when bands such as Venom, Cloven Hoof, Chateaux, and others, influenced strongly by the sentiments of Punk Rock (to include anti-religious sentiments), began adding those themes into their music. Personally, I find this whole "Technical Death" and so-called "Melodic Death" to be utterly pretentious. Death Metal came about as a means of taking Metal down to it's most raw and primitive elements, and exalting the dark, primitive, and carnal aspects of mankind in a manner which suits the stripped-down style of the music. True Death Metal, by sheer nature, cannot be melodic - it's completely anathema to the purpose for which Death Metal was founded. As for my personal favorites, Possessed, Incubus, Graf Spee, Morbid Angel... that's about all I really care for. I thought the first two Deicide releases were great, but they went to shit afterwards. And a lot of bands just sound monotonous and unoriginal in the scene anymore.

Yep. To me, bands such as In Flames, At the Gates and Insomnium are not death metal.

On that note, I actually thought their last album was decent. Not as great as the self-titled or Legion (All fucking hail!), but quite an improvement over albums like Insineratehymn or In Torment In Hell, anyhow.

I disagree, but the world would be a very fucking boring place if everyone liked exactly the same things.

"People around the world.. hold hands.. start a love train.. love train!"
Err... or maybe not. But yeah, the human species would be incredibly monotonous if we all liked the same of everything. I wonder how music discussions would sound if that were the case?
