QUOTE(Jeff @ Aug 21 2007, 01:19 AM) I wonder how music discussions would sound if that were the case?
They would sound like the music discussions I have with Podgie.
"I love that song!"
"Me too!"
"That album's great"
"Yeah, but they went shit after that"
"I know yeah"
basically.

I suppose, but I keep picturing them as having more of that 'Ben Stein' style of monotony about them.

Death are more a thrash band then a death metal band. The early stuff anyway. Though they are basically the pioneers of extreme and death metal. Along with Possessed anyway.
On the subject of Melodic Death metal... I don't believe that genre is supposed to have any similarities with death metal itself. Melodic death, to me, is saying the it's melody at the utmost brutal point. Being as heavy as you can while keeping thirds and melody and harmony etc. intact. Some and the only similarities to traditional death metal is the styles of drumming and the punk/hardcore tempo influence.
And yeah
VITAL - FUCKING - REMAINS

Death Breath are amazing, its like entombed before they went shit ( nicke was a founding member of entombed). so you now know who the main songwriter of that band was during the golden years.

QUOTE(Jeff @ Aug 21 2007, 12:32 AM) The original Death Metal band was POSSESSED.
You err in quite a few areas here. Death Metal is derivative of Thrash. Blast beats, guttural growling, and anti-religious sentiments are not indigenous to Death Metal. As with its predecessor, Thrash, Death Metal was very much influenced by Hardcore and the genres which were derivative of Hardcore Punk. Blast beats go back to Napalm Death. Guttural vocals appeared in Powerviolence and Crust Punk some time before Death Metal bands of the late 80s and early 90s began using them, whereas your DM bands circa 1985 - 1988 (such as Possessed, Incubus [now known as Opprobrium], Graf Spee, early Sepultura, etc.) tended to use either a more screaming style vocal (Possessed, Death, etc.), or a more harsh toned variation of traditional vocal styles (Sepultura, Incubus, etc.).
As for occultism in music, references can be found way back in the Delta Blues scene, with both of the Johnsons (Robert Johnson and Tommy Johnson) having both been alleged to have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for their musical abilities. The occult references are particularly prominent in the works of Robert Johnson, namely, his legendary "Hellhound On My Trail". Occult references would appear again throughout the history of Rock, particularly in the 60s (The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc), but the first Rock album to actually sing praise of demonic entities and forces would be the Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls from the 'Acid Rock' band Coven (1969). They would be followed closely by Prog Rock legends Black Widow, with their classic album Sacrifice (1970). As far as Metal goes, such motifs didn't appear until well into the NWoBHM scene, when bands such as Venom, Cloven Hoof, Chateaux, and others, influenced strongly by the sentiments of Punk Rock (to include anti-religious sentiments), began adding those themes into their music.
Personally, I find this whole "Technical Death" and so-called "Melodic Death" to be utterly pretentious. Death Metal came about as a means of taking Metal down to it's most raw and primitive elements, and exalting the dark, primitive, and carnal aspects of mankind in a manner which suits the stripped-down style of the music. True Death Metal, by sheer nature, cannot be melodic - it's completely anathema to the purpose for which Death Metal was founded.
As for my personal favorites, Possessed, Incubus, Graf Spee, Morbid Angel... that's about all I really care for. I thought the first two Deicide releases were great, but they went to shit afterwards. And a lot of bands just sound monotonous and unoriginal in the scene anymore.
Well.... I aint perfect
