I just voted yes!!!!!!!! It's not a full on death song, but there was no midway.
If you listen to the songs dynamics its a very Death metal type construction, the vocals are also a little darker than most Trivium songs.
The guitar riff that starts the song is a very commen downward sliding thing that is done in a lot of death metal songs. The main riff is jarring, very dark and evil sounding, the stop start time change type feel is also a commen death metal trait. The guitar sounds are thick with a heavy distortion, very much akin to later death metal recordings.
Ilisten to a lot of Death metal, Deicide are one of my favorite bands (although I do prefer Thrash) and I can definitely hear many MANY death type things with it.
Its important to remember that Death metal developed from thrash metal, so this song is kind of on the road to death. Its not a full on thrash song. If any of you dont believe me about the death/Thrash thing, then I suggest you listen to Morbid Angels alter of madness, the deicide demo (available as Amon:Feasting the beast) and Slayers Reighn in blood. Morbid Angel and Deicide are death metal, and their early recordings sound like Slayer to a degree, a thrash band!
Now check out Deicides Deicide, the thick guitars take the place and the songs, shock horror, sound a bit like demon!
Of course Demon isnt fully death. Upon close listening it sounds a lot like a Pantera song, in fact theres a bit which sounds like Pantera's Fucking Hostile (if i remember rightly)
I believe Ive stated my case clearly, anyone disagree!
Oh yeah, should have been a MIDDLE GROUND TO VOTE ON.
as a footnote, I live in England, where can I get the Capernhaum c.d?

In my opinion its not death metal, but its heavier than a lot of stuff Trivium has done, but then the production can be misleading, if you know what I mean

I have no idea..
Considering this topic has come up again i'll comment on it. Demon is the closest Trivium have been to death metal.
