Changed out the pickups to a D-Sonic and Air Norton,a killswitch, sanded off the black paint by hand(took 2 months),and laquered it,by myself. It was long and painful, but SO WORTH IT.It sounds 1,000,000x better and plays much better now that I've profiled the neck more.Tell me what you think.

Looks nnice, man. How long did it take you?

Awesome! Did you have to use a specific lacquer, or just standard nitrocellulose?

That neck looks fucking sweet! Though to make it better get rid of the shiny finish - bare wood ftw!

I like the shiny finish

Eh,I was going to do that, but basswood is a very lightly colored wood(like maple),and looks too bare without a coat of gloss on top of it(10 to be exact).Plus,it still had some residue from sanding it that was almost impossible to get off with just a wet rag.It felt too smooth and my arm would slip off when I placed my hand like I usually would.

No,I just went to home depot and asked the guy for a really glossy clear coat.It was like $4 a can.

2 1/2 months to hand sand it(I'm lazy) and a week to get everything installed.

The D-Sonic and Air Norton are the same as Petrucci uses, right?
How do you like them and what do they sound like?

The Air Norton that Petrucci uses is a custom shop model.
They sound great. The basswood makes the D-Sonic bright, but the bottom coil beefs up the low tone of it.The Air Norton is great for jazz/shred/rhythm's etc.Great combo, and I highly recomend it.

Its not about the looks - a smooth neck feels so much nicer to play than a finished one, imo.
But hey, it stills looks awesome to play!
