September 16, 2009 1:57:29 AM UTC Post #1

Im looking to buy a stack soon to start playing gigs, i want one with tubes, and with a nice, naturally heavy distortion.
Ive had my eye on the Peavey Valve King, but it might be a bit over my budget, im looking for something between $400-$700.
So which would you guys recomend? (personal experiences only)

The head is only $530, did anyone see me say that?
It's worth it in my opinion, you just have to know how to make it work.
EDIT: Here's a head for $430 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/PEAVEY-VALVE-KING-100-...1QQcmdZViewItem

$900?! What the hell dude...
It's not worth $900....I'd pay 500 for a new one...600 at most...
Ebay is worth a try...seriously..

The most inexpensive amp that I've seen and has the best tone (in my opinion) is the Valve King. It's funny you mentioned it... I've had my eye on that amp for a while myself. Buy the head off of Musician's Friend (it's only $530) and find a Behringer cabinet. They're fairly reliable. Would come out to about $830 if you get the Behringer cabinet... but I think it'd be worth it. No one wants to pay another $350 for a cabinet that sucks . If the cash ever comes in, buy any Mesa (Mark IV, Mark IV!!!) because they will always sound amazing.

(not from personal experience)
But I've read reviews saying the B-52 AT-100 sounds better than most higher-end rigs. And thats only $600
Has anyone played through it before? It seems interesting.

You're in the US right? I'd honestly just save a couple hundred extra and try and get a 2nd hand Peavey 5150. You can get em for 600ish and sometimes cheaper 2nd hand. But then again you'd have to get a cab which all up could cost you around a grand 2nd hand. But I think it's worth the extra money. I'm assuming you play something along the lines of Death Metal/Grindcore, and when it comes to those genre's 5150's can't be beat IMO.
OR if you really can't spend a few hundred extra, I'd recommend a Peavey Transtube Supreme. It sounds pretty similar to a 5150 and you can get em on ebay for $150 2nd hand. Infact heres one

Ola Frenning (Soilwork) used a Transtube Supreme for A Predators Portrait, so if you're into those kind of guitar tones the Transtube is a steal for $150, and they sound sick too.

I played the Peavey-valve king 100 at band practice that some kid left over at my drummers house.
It's not to bad but I think I'd recommend getting a tube screamer for it.
The dist. on it needs to be tighten up quite a bit.
