Guitar lessons?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new here but I've been wondering.
I've been playing guitar for about 2 and a half years now, been playing things like Disturbed and Metallica, you know just standard heavy stuff as far as I'm concerned, and lately I've been challenging myself more by playing Trivium's stuff. And here's my question.
Does anyone know if Matt and/or Corey learned guitar teaching themselves, or did they ever take formal lessons? I mean, is their style and musicianship based on a lot of official theory, or did they just sort of sound it out for themselves and get lucky? not that there's anything wrong with that, I mean if you asked me what an arpeggio was I'd say are you talking words?

they definitely got lessons, theres only so far you can go without theory. btw you should definitely learn some theory yourself, your playing two and half years and dont know what an arpeggios is?

lol this is constructive critisism : go get lessons, learn as much fucking theory as possible and practice every day.
in a few years you might be as good as matt and corey if you do that

thanks for the constructive criticism but in truth, I actually do know quite a bit of theory, and write my own stuff without many problems and whatnot.
But because I didn't take any formal lessons, I don't know the official terminology and probably don't know as MUCH theory as someone who has. Just because I don't regognize the term arpeggio doesn't mean that I can't perform one, if you know what I mean.
And as good as matt and corey? I freaking hope so. lol

There's actually many guitarists who make it without theory.... Jimi Hendrix among them. It's just that lessons make it much easier and those who have had lessons are more likely to make it, but it isn't impossible as you make it seem.

meh i wasnt really say it was impossible i was just saying learning theory helps you learn new techniques faster, lets you become a better musician faster and is just generally better if you want to learn different styles of playing. the guitarist from red hot chilli peppers wrote into total guitar magazine a few months back saying how he wished he learned alot more theory but he didnt want to lose the creative aspect of his playing.

Look at Ace Frehley, he's stated numerous times he knows NOTHING about writing music and he wrote some of the most amazing guitar riffs in rock music, Parasite, Cold Gin, Rocket Ride, and Shock Me.

I've read that Matt never took lessons, but Corey did.
