Harsh vocals clarification...
September 16, 2009 1:58:08 AM UTC Post #1

Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before but I was curious and have been meaning to post this for a while.
I remember around the pre-release of The Crusade where the band was saying why they had removed the harsh vocals and that it was because Matt thought he could not sing properly (I don't get this, I thought his voice was fine back then) and the thing that intrigued me most was that they also said that none of them were ever into bands that used screaming vocals. Yet they all say they love Slipknot and also of all bands, Cannibal Corpse. Also Matt says he loves black metal? So it seems rather confusing?
So basically they say they don't like harsh vocals but then they start using them again?
Anyone shed any light on this as to why the change back?
Thanks

They just weren't into any bands and weren't aspiring to be a band of that nature so they wanted to change at the time. When the band shifted from playing 20-30 minutes to playing for an hour or so it took a huge toll on Matt's throat and all the screaming started to interfere with his clean vocals live.

Yeah Matt's screams tended to be a bit throaty. People can bitch all they like but it was a good thing he stopped screaming. He could have done damage to himself and then he wouldnt be able to sing or scream.
Also, just because someone can scream doesnt mean they have to. Trivium wanted to take their music in a different direction then the millions of bands that simply scream for the sake of it. Screaming doesnt make a band better (even though a lot of my favourite bands use harsh vocals).
And yes, bands like In Flames were a big influence on their sound back in the day. But you gotta realise, when Ascendancy came out, they were getting lumped in with the "metalcore" crowd. And that wasnt where they were from (I dont hear anything HARDCORE about their sound, even though they do use some metalcore-style breakdowns). There was various reasons given for the "lack of screaming" but hey look on the brightside, he is using harsh vocals again and they are better then ever!!!
Sorry for basically saying what Dustin just said But yeah, this is one of those subjects people wouldn't shut up about around The Crusade's release.

Yea it was fairly obnoxious all the vocal questions around that time. Thanks for taking what I said in depth I was in a hurry.

I dont think that was obnoxious, obnoxious is when you get the threads like "Why did matt stop screaming they suck now", or "Trivium sold out cause they dont scream anymore".

i think they didn't like any bands that scream at the time they did crusade but like everyone else their musical tastes are gonna change over time. matt has also said that he wasn't able mix screaming and singing too well at the time but now he is able to do it without a problem. i guess his vocal ability got more versatile over the years.

Keep in mind he's only 23 years old and when you use your voice that much at such a young age it probably fluctuates more.
It's not an obnoxious question it's just one that has came up over and over again.

That was during the Crusade days. He's basically gone back on everything he said in tose days. He's into black metal, he said on the Shogun DVD that he liked Phil from Pantera's screaming, they love Slipknot and Paulo's very into death metal.

1. Paolo, 2. Which part said that? Far as I know... Corey and Matt are the biggest "death metal" fans in the band. I'll check the DVD. Most I've heard Paolo mention DM was a Cannibal Corpse song title in one of the few clips on the CC DVD where Trivium share their own comments about Cannibal Corpse. (Matt's favourite CC album is Bloodthirst and he really likes the songtitle "Stabbed in the Throat" haha)

Correct. Especially Corey.
