what are some good songs by megadeth, metallica etc to learn for influencial reasons so you can inherit into own material?

I'm not too keen on Megadeth, but as for Metallica try
Blackened
One
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Master of Puppets
Battery
Try learning some Pantera too, Dimebag had such a good sense of rhythm it amazes me some of the stuff he played absolutely 100% tight...
Your Pantera list should contain..
Cowboys From Hell (for some reason it's still one of the hardest riffs to play right for me..)
Regular People (that will get your timing trained on that into riff..)
5 Minutes Alone (a lot of percussive rakes and some not so easy riffs on the bridges)
Domination (Quick hands on this one for the main riff and some really crazy stretched ascending runs on the solo which should make your hands hurt)
And anything else by them really!

Some more good Metallica songs to learn are:
Four Horsemen
Creeping Death
Fade to Black (first song everyone usually learns by Metallica)
And Justice For All...
IMO you could learn anything from Metallica and learn something that would influence you... James Hetfield was an amazing song writer... I like playing anything/everything before the black album... I feel they weren't metal after Cliff died during the making of And Justice for All... They just turned to Hard Rock/Bluesy Rock... oh well.. As for Megadeth I'm not a big fan but I think everyone learns Hangar 18 and Symphony of Destruction.. Also a song everyone always learns from Pantera is Walk..

The new songs Kirk is talking about aren't the two new songs on youtube. They're canning those two because rick rubin said they were shit and should forget about anything they ever did after the black album. With Rick as their new producer I'm sure the new cd has a good chance at getting metallica's old sound back... should be out the end of this year or very early next year...

Even if they get their old sound back, the songwriting lately has been rubbish. Even with the tone on St. Anger you could probably write a decent album (even with the biscuit tin drums) - but Metallica didn't. In fact the album was a joke...! It will be a nice suprise if Metallica pull something out the bag - but I'm not expecting anything.

if you're just starting guitar then a great song to learn is 'seek and destroy' by metallica, the intro will help you understand the frets and help your timing n all

Thats the only metallica song I know.
