John Petrucci

John Petrucci is my favourite guitarist. But i have heard a lot of critics saying he's over rated, over technical and plays too many notes for the sake of it, which i think is bullshit. A mate of mine says hes a bit shit cos he isnt rock n roll enough - also bullshit.
I think his Ernie Ball Musicman is the best guitar on the planet, but a lot of people say its ugly.
So here's a poll to find out what you lot think of him. Also, how do ya think his solo material stuff compares to Dream Theater/L.T.E.? Not as good in my opinion, he works best with D.T.

I've only said very good for the sheer fact I haven't heard enough material. However, I saw the video Glenn posted of his somewhere, and thought the tone and act was fucking amazing, was sheerly awesome. If I heard some more stuff, he could be quite a liking to me.

He's an amazing player, but I don't really think prog fits him. I don't know why, but I'd rather see him do a melodic thrash/ melodic death. Maybe I just don't like prog that much.
He is a truly amazing player though. I but too technical for my tastes, but that's just me

I love his playing, although in terms of inovative phrasing, the last two albums, Train of Thought and Octavarium were 'Meh'. That is ofcourse when you ocmpare it to like 6 Degrees, or Images and Words. Still great albums. I enjoyed Train of Thought but coupled with Labries shit-worthy vocals, and the style it just wasn't what DT was to me. I enjoyed Octavarium song-writing wise tenfold more then ToT. The structures were much better, the song writing and phrasing were superior.
That being said, compared to any other bands and players his phrasing is always superior but when compared as a collective of his works, the last two albums don't have that same feel he used to give. I enjoy the newer songs and structures more, but the solo playing I enjoyed on some of the previous releases more. That being said there is only one valid option on this poll and to vote otherwise, is admitting you are handiccapable.

John Petrucci is fucking amazing. Like Wraith said, ToT and Octavarium aren't that amazing Petrucci wise, but if you actually look at every aspect of his work you will realize he's a complete God on guitar. He's fast, smart, and extremely versatile on the guitar. He can play some of the most raw forms of music like that is his over all style, including Jazz, Modern Shred, Neo-Classical, Thrash, Prog, Blues, Metal, etc.
And one of the coolest things about him is he almost has two different sides to him. It seemed like he became a totally different guitar player when he chopped his hair and got a new axe. The old Petrucci is more raw prog and jazz player being a more fresh Berklee grad. And the new Petrucci is more modern metal and shred. Both sides are flat out amazing.
So yea, Petrucci is god like in my eyes.

My guitar instructor would love you Glenn.
I agree, he's one of my favorites for sure. I think it was petrucci who really made me want to play seriously for the first time, before hthen I was just fooling around on my guitar, not really getting anywhere.
