i used one in the studio once. its a nice little unit, but no matter what you play you cant help but sound like Iron Maiden
good clean sound, though i would say if you are after a marshall, something like a JCM2000 DSL would be much better value and more hard wearing if you want to gig it. The JMP1 is fine in the studio, but i fear it might be a bit fragile if you used it for a gig, say in a pub, or somewhere without security looking after your gear.

my worry is can a marshall properly do metal w/o a tubescreamer / overdrive pedal? Or am i best looking at a xxx / 6505 / something else..?

You do not need an overdrive pedal with a JMP-1 man, trust me on this.It has enough balls already.

i was more referring to a jcm200 with that bit.
I've already decided not to get a jmp, too expensive

go peavey
5150/JSX/XXX are all great amps

September 10, 2006 5:05:02 PM UTC Post #6

^^ aye... but if you want crystal cleans & a serious metal tone, go xxx... 5150 is a killer amp, but shit cleans.
if i had it my way, id buy a 5150 head for my distortion & a fender twin reverb for my cleans & switch between the two. unfortunately, i don't have the cash just yet.

you could use maybe a peavey valve king for cleans, or maybe even any valvestate head for cleans cos IMO tube sound isnt as critical for cleans as it is for distortion.

well, didnt Trivium use JCM2000s on The Crusade? isnt that metal enough for ya
i tried a 6505 the other day and i was kinda disappointed. yes its high gain, but i found it quite noisy and lacking low end. never played a XXX, but i've heard good things. if you're going Peavey and can afford it, i would recommend trying a JSX, awesome amp.
You could also try then ENGL fireball. at £800+ for the head its pricey, but its a fuckin ball buster of an amp.

Well, I went and tried a JCM2000 TSL 100 watt head today
Fuck me sideways
The thing literally blew me away at only half volume, and it sounds the dogs bollocks.
N00b question, you can just run heads into a mixing desk then through PA can't you?
