hmm... A few thoughts on heafy's writing ability.
Well, after a bit of relection, a few conclusions spring to mind. Thinking back on the lyrics of the albums they've done as a cumulative effort, I can say that the lyrics are very thought provoking and powerful. Powerful meaning that they never convey a sense of apathy, they always seem to be immersed in particular emotions, be it aggression, anger, sadness, pride and even contentment, I mean just look at Anthem.
Another thing that hit me at least as far as raw literary ability is concerned, is the wording used in many of the songs. I mean fuck, the boy's got one hell of a vocabulary. There are more than a few words that I've picked up just listening to the songs, some more obvious than others like trepidation, conflagration, constituents, etc.
Now his isn't to say that big words mean good lyrics, but after looking them up on dictionary.com, they actually fit really well I think.
One thing that I think that has been constant on all three albums is the clarity of what is trying to be said with each song. The way that things are put across lyrically has always seemed very striking to me, very pragmatic and straightfoward while at the same time treading the line of pretension and not crossing it (at least I think).
So yeah, to basically sum it up I think that for evocation of thought and feeling heafy's really talented in his lyrics, and he's definitely got a good head on his shoulders.

When All Light Dies has some of my favorite Lyrics EVER.

April 01, 2007 5:46:51 PM UTC Post #4

yeah some of the lyric on ember to inferno were brilliant EG
Fugue :
As I stand at the edge of existence
Nameless shores of infinity
Perpetual unbirth unraveling distance
Clandestine truths unveiled
When All Light Dies :
In this chasm lying broken
Is a child charred inside
No more is there any hope
Shattered bones bloodied scars
Deliver me towards the soil
Close up the sun grant me rest
In worms coil

i think theyre great, and theres just equaly good lyrics and better , to be found on the cd
- on ascendancy
Declaration :
Holding onto what makes us whole
Never letting their poison take control
Freezing the air (that stands between all of us)
Closing the eyes (bear witness to me)
Freezing the Fear (that stands between all of us)
Closing the eyes (bear witness to me)
Decieved :
Disintegration constituents to decompose of the parts
A malformation utopia systematic unity can't be achieved
Be numb to all the things
Crusade :
Sadness :
Scarecrow is left crucified, left freezing, bleeding
tired and wondering why. The wolves just couldn’t understand
Its the preachers, and the teachers, Government, close-minded creatures
try to teach us, To Hate that which is different
Tread the floods :
Beating this dead horse is exhausting
Heartbreaking to see my hand's shaking
I'm knee-deep in the dead, still wading
still wading in this, this well called life

_____
to be brutaly honest , ive just realized that, compared to the 2 old cd's, the crusade was hard to pick to really good examples, its actually made me think that yes matts lyrics standard did drop for the crusade

i agree that his lyrics were at there peak at ETI
falling to grey for example:
''In this day aspirations star decayed
It was the light of our desires
A fire burns in the mind
Torching once fundamental truths
Downfall
Self loathing it's your state of mind
Drowning in dejection
Homicidal of your talents
It's mental suicide
Downfall
One by one they all drown
Down the path I can't hear''
whilst most songs on the crusade have pretty cliche lyrics.

heafy seems to have worked more on instrumental than lyrics with the crusade. his lyrics were great on eti and ascendancy.

the crusade was written on tour so he probably didn't have all the time in the world

QUOTE(Planeshift @ Apr 1 2007, 01:58 PM) I don't think his skills in writing lyrics has decreased at all, but rather..I think he may have tried to `dumb` them down a little for The Crusade. And by dumbing them down...I mean like...making them a bit more straight forward and blatant. I think he was just trying something different.
and for those bringing up To The Rats as an example...that song's lyrics clearly aren't the most philosophical and metaphorical lyrics ever, but I don't think it was like...Heafy was sitting down trying hard to write them. I think he wrote lyrics that on purpose. It definitely fits the song...and your often ignoring some of the good lines in it like `You hide behind barricades built of facades, you think your safe`.
Totally agreed.
I like/love matt's writing as it is so straight forward.

Moved to appropriate section

Well, it's not a very intelligent, thought-provoking lyric, but it's pretty badass.
As a lyricist, he is all right, nothing really amazing. I personally think that "Mistaken identity/You really got this one wrong" is the worst though. That one line sets a shitty tone for the rest of the song.
