metal bands playing ballads?

Whats your opinions on them?
Do you think its bands trying different musical approaches to show off their talent?
Or is it just signs that a once fucking heavy band are turning into a bunch of pussies?

some good exampes are 'sanitarium' by metallica, 'wasting love' by iron maiden, 'cemetary gates' by pantera and 'return to serenity' by testament

Anyone who thinks an accoustic song means a band is going "soft" is a moron.

Voice of the Soul, perfect example of a band not going soft.

I'd have to disagree with the idea that if a band does a ballad they go soft. If you follow Pantera, for example, after they recorded Cemetary Gates on the Cowboys From Hell album, their music only got angrier, louder, and even darker in most songs. If you listen to Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven, you see that they were neither soft nor toning everthing down. Even their "ballads" had Phil Anselmo screaming.
"Hollow's" another good "ballad". It starts off as a soulful lamentation for a friend who's become a brain dead vegetable in a hospital bed, but it ends in pure rage and aggression, very typical, but still great.
Also, you can't forget Metallica's first ballad, "Fade to Black." Kickass song, 'nuff said.
