New Amp Head!
September 16, 2009 1:57:37 AM UTC Post #1

Hey everyone, I finally got my first amp head. It's a newer version of the Peavey Valve King 100. The Peavey "Frankenstein" thing under it is a ghetto-rigged 2x12 cabinet with some Bugera vintage style speakers in it. I'll post some sound samples in a bit:

Here's a quick sample. It's pretty stupid and random, though:

That sounds awesome, although your tone sounds a little flat which i'm sure you can easily sort out with some knob-twiddling.

Here's a better one. The first one was recorded with a bad mic. The tubes are a little microphonic, I'll get news ones eventually, it's not very noticeable.

I don't like the ValveKing at all because of my personal preference in music being more extreme metals, and this amp doesn't do much more other than hard rock or some softer heavy metal. I think it's pretty disappointing for a tube amp, especially one coming from Peavey, but it works well with other types of music, and just like any other Peavey, they have great cleans.
The ValveKing is of course much cheaper than a JCM 2000 from Marshall, but I bet the JCM 2000 is much better and more versatile. You don't really need the DSL 100, the DSL 50 works just fine as you might not need that much headroom - I hear the DSL 100 are built a bit better, but I'm not all that sure. Just something I heard like, a couple of times. Keep in mind that 100 watts doesn't equal twice the loudness. I think that you only add like 4 dB if you double the wattage.

EDIT: In the near future, possibly before the end of this year, I'm getting myself a Marshall-head, and I'll buy either the JCM 2000 or the Vintage Modern 2266. I first wanted to get a JCM 800 head (I used to have an '87 JCM 800 combo) but you need an OD-pedal to drive the amp enough to get the dist I want, and I want to be able to quickly switch between cleans and high-gain distortion. After I saw Trivium in Malmö on November 22nd, I had a talk with Matt, and one of the things we talked about were amps, and he said he was thinking about getting a JCM 800, but it seems he settled with a JVM210H. I don't remember liking the JVM amps personally when I tried one, but maybe he managed to squeeze out sweet sounds from it. I don't know why he didn't go back to his DSL 100, though...

"I've been having these weird thoughts lately... like... how did I get to this place!?"
