NIN/Ministry type vocal processor

I have been looking at several vocal processors to get a really mechanical, robotic sounding voice, really growling like the vocals in Nine Inch Nails or Ministry. I have looked at several processors online and I'm wanting to spend somewhere in the range of 500 dollars. What do you recommend I try? - Please include link to actual product if possible.

Download FL Studio 7 and use the built in vocoder. Or you could use something like Antares Auto-Tune (VST or rackmount) and set the limits really high, then add distortion either with software or with a pedal, but you'd have to make sure you add the distortion at the end of the chain. If you want to use it live, then your best bet is some sort of hardware vocoder, but if that's the case you'll either need a midi keyboard to play the notes you want the vocals to take, or some way to send synchronized midi data, such as with a laptop that has the notes to your songs already programmed in. And there are always the all in one things front DigiTech and suchlike, but you can't ever get full control with them, it's usually mainly about presets and a minor amount of tweaking.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not gonna have a PC set up in my studio for a while. I'm gonna go with the Digitech Vocal effect thing, the VX300 ... it'll work for playing until we get our full recording setup. Thanx.
