Old School Death Metal

The fact that they're from the Midlands of Britain
To be honest I would've preferred a more typically raw production on their mid-period albums myself but it was more the "Diatribes" era that suffered from over-production. Whatever you think of the production of the "Harmony Corruption", "Utopia Banished" and "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" albums they had some of their finest ever songs, "Suffer The Children" is still (alongside "Siege Of Power") my favourite Napalm Death track today and "Plague Rages" always gets a huge reaction live.

They sounded pretty much like most flordia bands during that period of time. In my opinion it was russ russell who saved napalm as he got them back to that european style of production.
Wow wow wow. I rate Napalm Death through many stages. I LOVE their older stuff and especially the FETO Demo before Scum. But what im getting at is their death metal era was amazing.
Russ Russell is amazing but he definatly didnt "save" them. Napalm Death have never let me down at all.
My favourite ND stuff would be Mentally Murdered EP, Lee Dorian and Bill Steers last effort, Harmony Corruption and Mass Appeal Madness.

Hell yes.

I can't believe I haven't mentioned Vital Remains in here until now. They're another one of my very favourite 'old school' death metal bands.
Forever Underground and Dawn of the Apocalypse being the best of their releases, for me anyway.

Their latter stuff became more BDM I think especially with Glen Benton on the vokills
But yeah the early stuff is definetly "old school" yep

Nah, there's nothing "blackened" about Vital Remains last few albums in the slightest. If anything their newer stuff has more in common with neo-classical fretwanking stuff, I mean they even covered Yngwie on the last one

I'll always disagree on the whole blackened death metal thing when it comes to Vital Remains. Sure their lyrics touch on satanism, the occult and of course anti-christianity.. but so do Deicide's, and I wouldn't tag them as 'blackened' death.
If anything I would say the later material (with Glen) has a more 'brutal' sound.. Either way, good band. Better logo.
EDIT - Okay, the Prof beat me. (You bastard!)

I meant Brutal DM
If I was was going to mean Blackened DM.. I'd say it as Blackened DM But nah, when I said BDM.. I mean Brutal DM
Sorry for confusing anyone (Oh yeah, I get why you dudes think I meant Blackened.. because in the past I described VR as having a blackened sound but now Im more wiser I realise it's more in line with technical brutal DM then anything especially Dechristianize.. with that drum sound especially haha)
Blackened Death Metal to me is Behemoth or Belphegor or Incantation!
