retro nu metal thread

That's exactly what I think about Nu-Metal - most of the bands just didn't 'get' what was good or bad about what they were influenced by. Fred Durst has said how influenced they were by Rage Against The Machine, but listening to them you can see they got it totally wrong. Many people unfairly credit rage with the whole rap-metal movement, but rap-metal just didn't get what rage were doing. When you listen to it properly, RATM's music is clearly based on hip-hop with structure not dissimilar to that of early Cypress Hill and Public Enemy in the way the bass drums and guitar worked together, with heavy riffs mixed in, so rap style vocals worked. Nu Metal bands just didn't get that and decided to do really shitty raps over really shitty riffs, and they wondered why rage fans hate them...

Yeah man. I love Rage Against the Machine and Anthrax's collabration with Public Enemy even (Im surprised they didnt take that idea further... the thrash/punk sound of that song mixed with rap).
But Limp Bizkit fucking suck!!! Only "nearly decent" song was that Mission Impossible song but thats because the MI theme tune is legendary.
Fear Factory are said to have gone in a "nu metal" direction. Even Chimaira's early albums have a Slipknot style sound to them. But if I had to say it... FF and Chimaira are way better then "real nu metal" bands even on those "nu metally" sounding albums.
Dan showed me a video for a Machine Head song when they went through their "nu metal" phrase *cringes* Oh man, Robb Flynn WHAT DRUGS WERE YOU TAKING!? FROM BURN TO MY EYES TO THAT!! At least his redeemed himself (in my eyes) with the last two albums
Oh and im glad Dez F made Devildriver.. because I've listened to Coal Chamber (boring!!). I know The Prof hates Devildriver But I quite think they're alright. Dez's vocals do sound a lil funny because of his accent. haha
And yays for Killswitch Engage coming along and killing nu-metal. I mean.. whatever your opinion on "metalcore" is.. it's definetly better then nu-metal Even though there is quite a lot of metalcore bands too that are worthless. Thank fuck for death metal!

QUOTE(The Hellcat @ Dec 2 2008, 02:25 AM) I think it was really ingenuity.
Bands like Prong, White Zombie and Faith No More really didn't do just anything so simple as having a guy rapping over a metal riff as nu metal did, it was more complicated than that, I think. While Mike Patton had rap stylings, he never painted himself as a rapper like the nu metal guys did and he never really tried to be street, and he was far more versatile than all of those douchebags.
The sound was infused with some stylings similar to hip-hop, funk and groove, but it was never just a simple borrowed groove or riff. Nu metal just really dumbed down a lot of that infusion and made it easier for the masses to follow so they could act street and tough. Blech.
If you will excuse me, I have to go listen to Angel Dust now....

if you notice with the peeping tom record mike patton brought alot of the rap rock factors of fnm back yet it didnt sound shitty
I think One minute silence could pull their music off better than most of the nu metal bands, i remember when they supported slipknot on the iowa tour they got a better crowd reaction and pit than slipknot got. they actually sounded a hell of a lot better in the live enviroment than slipknot did on that tour.

Well, one of the reasons I really dug White Zombie when they first came out was the awesome basslines, which had groove and funk stylings. Rob's delivery was also somewhat hip-hoppish or funk-inspired in the cadence, but it still retained enough edge to be metal. It was really just damn sweet.
Prong was just badass in my opinion..."Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck" yar. \m/ I hear the intro all the time in random spots on the radio now.

Ah, Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck! What a classic dancefloor tune!
See, that's another thing with nu-metal, before it rock clubs would play a varied setlist and (usually early on when barely anyone was there admittedly) you'd get a bit of death metal and old thrash/crossover, then it'd change to grunge and it'd be all change on the dancefloor then it'd be a bit of 'mainstream' metal like Machine Head, Fear Factory and White Zombie and everything would swap around again and you'd end up getting a mix of everything from Anthrax to Deicide to No Doubt, Metallica, Slayer, Nirvana, Corrosion Of Conformity, Nine Inch Nails, Iron Maiden etc etc across the whole night and everybody was happy. Now though it just seems to be the same old shit in every club across the country every week - usually in the same order as last week. I mean, seriously, why are clubs still playing fucking Drowning Pool?!

December 02, 2008 9:15:17 AM UTC Post #28

God... I know... every time I hear "let the bodies hit the floor" I want to kill someone.

December 02, 2008 9:19:04 AM UTC Post #29

let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR!!!
Why do they play Drowning Pool? Because if they have a good source of alcohol there are many people my age, errm myself included, who love that song when pissed!
It's a fucking terrible song, but it works.....the same is true with Limp Bizkit's Rollin'......I feel so wrong saying that.

But yeah, the clubs really shouldn't be playing that shit anymore, but I suppose they play what the people want? The average age seems to be mid-20's in the clubs that shit is played in, so they're just playing what the people grew up listening to when they were like 18.
I for one am sick of nights where if you're lucky you might get Angel of Death at 10pm, then some Metallica, some modern stuff, and by 11 your'e stuck with a hideous collection of Korn Drowning Pool Rammstein Slipknot Limp Bizkit Linkin Park etc etc etc

If they played what people actually wanted they'd actually check their request sheets rather than just playing the same songs in the same order every week.
In my experience you tend to get the people who are so plastered they don't care what they're dancing to on the dancefloor and stood around the bar you get plenty of people who probably haven't ventured near the dancefloor in years and are just there because they can still get a drink with their mates there after the pub's closed - if the local hasn't taken advantage of the extended licensing hours of course
If the club has one I tend to head straight for the classic rock room, I'd rather listen to a load of stuff like Skid Row, Scorpions and Motley Crue than tedious nu-metal shite any day of the week. The last one I went to played Rainbow's Stargazer in full and I was happily dancing like a fool to Kiss and Alice Cooper while the main room had shite like Disturbed and Papa Roach blaring out.
