Shogun DVD Review
September 16, 2009 1:57:55 AM UTC Post #1

Here Is My review / quide, Of the DVD that came with the special edition of the album. first off, the basics...
Dvd starts with a riff from the song Shogun and repeats about 15 seconds of it over and over, There are 2 options to choose from,
"The Making Of Shogun" and "Shogun - The Riffs"
MAKING OF: 52:56
I was abit dissapointed by the opening as i it was basically episode 1 of the making of vids from online, and i thought it was going to continue like this throughout the whole thing, thankfully i was wrong. A Better introduction to the making of would have been an interview with the band talking about the begginning of the album and the roots from which is was born. But they do this to an extent by saying they are making the album in Nashville. Although im not quite sure how geographical location alters the studio and sound but yeh. The band appears to like Nashville alot But the making of has a light intro about the band talking about the country song they made called "my dog" its pretty funny lol.
After 5:15 the true begginning of the making of, its much like Episode 2 of the making of vignettes.
After 7 minutes we start with trakcing drums, travis talking about how he wants to keep peoples heads banging ect. Its less a "making of" and more like a travis interview. drums took 6 days on this album, the crusade took 2.5 days and ascendenacy was 4 days. He does a good british accent on one clip lol. the only clip of a making of part is from the intro to insurrection. Drummer of the night =)
12 minutes in and Paulo tells us how to make an english muffin =) random! Now the guitars start. The start with Into The Mouth of Hell first, they need to get the whole song done for the Madden game. but this is quickly interupted by the vocals, which sound awesome btw matt =) He talks about having to hold his stomach in to achieve a better sound. He talks about how he likes Rob Flyn vocals. He says he doesnt do the screams live anymore but both corey and paulo want him to.. hence why he is in some live vids =) Matt has really good super clean vocals in these clips. Most notably in Shogun. (best song by far) Imo they should have alot more acousitcal moments with clean vocals in the songs. 23 minutes and we're still in the song SHOGUN, they keep talking about it being a 13 minute song but its actually 11:21? so... oki then. Still the best song on the album and trivium shouldnt be scared to do more songs like this on the next album. Which im guessing will be self titled.
24 minutes in we start talking about Coreys solos and how particular he is about them.
31 minutes and a very odd moment happens. Matt tells us how he never thought that chorus' have the titles of the songs in them =S wtf? its the most obvious thing ever and apparantly he's only jsut realised it. makes him seem a lil dumb but i know he's not he's just thinking about songs in a different way
33 minutes in and the band , or mainly travis has a hissy fit over having to record more drums. boo-hoo seems very silly and the making of going into a soap opera like moment (35 minutes) with orchestral "sad" music playing with the band talking about how hard it is for them out here... o.O kay then...
37 minutes in and they are discussing b-sides (i can understand why they arnt on the album they are no where near as good and dont fit in. just my opinion, i know many of u love the "death metal" vocals matt does. its impressive but its no Michael Akerfeldt.
43 minutes in and we are looking at Throes Of Perdition and paulo came up with the intro and apparantly recorded it on the album? but then we see corey doing it so im unsure.
46 minutes in and nymphomaniac paulo shows us his collages of cock and butt hole faces lol. random
50 minutes in we are doing solos and talking about how well the album came out. i agree for the most part.
The End
Closing thoughts.... i would have prefered a more structured documentary, where an idea for the album, finding a studio, setting up, reheasing, recording, day by day, everything then mixing, artwork, photoshoots, mastering ect... but its a pretty good dvd.
8/10
SHOGUN - THE RIFFS
2 parts, corey and matt, and then paulo.
coreys part is very good and matt often makes some mistakes, perhaps this part of the dvd was rushed but it is none the less a pretty cool feature =)
7/10

Closing thoughts, awesome album, and a nice dvd package, but could have been better. the best part is watching matts vocals i think. i'd rate Opeths dvd "making of deliverance and damnation" the best ive seen and the God Forbid one from special edition of Constitution of treason is a little better.
I hope the next trivium album has about 8-10 songs.. but with an instrumental again (15 minutes)!!! and 2 songs like Shogun, long (over 10 mins each) and with each normal song including heavy and mellow parts and being no shorter than 6 minutes... e.g
Album 5: Self Titled
1. Long Intro Into Heavy Song - 8 mins
2. Heavy Song - 6 mins
3. Epic Prog Song 1 - 12 mins
4. Heavy Song - 6 mins
5. Mellow / Heavy Song - 7 mins
6. Epic Prog Song 2 - 12 mins
7. Mellow / Heavy Song - 7 mins
8. Instrumental - 15 mins
73 mins total

Hmm, great review and all but not sure how you get the whole 'self titled' album thing.
Their demo was self titled, and they have just released Shogun. Give them at least a year before you start talking another new album.

Yeah, two albums named Trivium would be confusing!
Good review. I really enjoyed the Making Of DVD. Wish it was longer XD

The dvd was a real treat. Paolo's Bass playing how to, while shorter was more well done than either guitar how tos. He mentioned the fret numbers and stuff. It would have taken Corey and Matt longer to describe it better but it would be worth it. Also I think the lessons should have been devided into sections, so you can skip around songs when trying to learn them. Yes I know Matt told/showed us which chords to play in what order. But I just felt Paolo's Bass instuctional was great. As for the documentary, I have little complaint except a little longer would be better. I remember In Flame's limited edition version of their album "A Sense of Purpose" had a 180 Min. documentary. Of course I don't like them nearly as much as Trivium. And I wouldn't expect 180 mins . But overall definatly a great dvd!

Yeah I loved the guitar riffs on it. Everything else was awesome too. I was just hoping to see more of everything they have done up until this far too, like making of the Crusade and behind scenes of Ascendancy and ETI... That would have been a treat! Also a little more in depth with the actual recording parts. They showed a lot of drums and singing, but they hardly showed any bass parts or rhythm guitar parts. Still interesting though, worth the extra cash!

Cheers =)
Yeh but the demo isn't an album. And i was thinking because it would be the 5th album it might be. It doesnt really matter, i was only doing it for how i wanted the album to be structured. Less song, but longer ones. more progressive ala Crusade / Shogun.
p.s The Shogun riffs segments are 22 minutes long for guitars, and 9 minutes for bass.

You all are starting to piss me off with the "omfgs why isn't shogun 13 minutesl?!@#K!:L!!?" Shit gets cut, shit gets chopped down, moved, taken out, rearranged and all sorts of stuff before it hits the album. I bet in the original stages of the song it was 13 minutes but song lengths are something that change between studio time and when it hits shelves.

thats a bit off topic dont you think dust????

lol, they were discussing the length of the dvd, not the track shogun, and I havent seen anybody complaing that shogun isnt 13 mins, in fact most people love it at the length it is
lol

No not really off topic. It's been discussed a number of times.

just to comment on the 13 min shogun thing,
bands will do a full take of the song . the full take was most likely 13 min, it is 11 min on cd .
this would be because im sure the last riff was just plaed a few more times . so instead of it growing old, they just used the Fade out sooner.
