on most songs, my pc does it. I figured this'd be cool to record and use as backing tracks to jam along to on guitar...
But then I hit a problem
I thought I'd be able to simply record them from the pc, without having to mic up a speaker. Turns out, my pc just takes the trebly bits of the song and leaves some, but keeps mainly the bass so when i record it it sounds like
DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM as it were.. is there any way I can get it to record them exactly as i hear them without using a mic?

well im not sure,
google audacity, and depending on your sound card.. you should be able to record directly what you hear from your PC, without a mic. You can choose were the recording input comes from, Just fiddle around. But If its your speakers making the vocals fade away, then surely other people will still hear them through their speakers (if you just record what your computer hears...?

Most of the Soundcards can do this you have to select what you want to record in the Windows Audio Manager. In your record-Program (i use Soundforge 6) you can select as input "Record what i hear" or The "Windows Soundmapper".
I guess that topic should move to the General discussion or General music forum. There are sure a lot of musicians in those section who can you help more than i do with my poor broken english :wink:
