So I wanna know!

"Who are Trivium?"

or

"Trivium are shit!"

Blah blah blah.

I get this all the time, and I always simply ask them why, and they can never give me a solid answer except for "they just are," or they put on an Exodus or Megadeth CD and go "this is real metal."

Most of my friends are die-hard old school metal fans. And won't even give any fresh new band a chance unless it's distinctly similar to bands like Exodus, Megadeth, Testament, Pantera, Slayer etc etc etc...

I personally LOVE all of the above and then some, but I also love and appreciate the new shit young guys like Trivium are creating today. All of the elements of a good rock/metal band are there, so why do people hang shit on it? I will never understand. If you don't like it, no worries, but to call them shit, or not real metal. I'm sorry, I am yet to see you play in front of thousands in countries all over the world?

So I'm just wondering if anybody else out there gets this, doesn't even have to be Trivium related, I personally just get it with Trivium, but other experiences; post away. What do you show them or say to them to try and sway their minds? Or do you just leave it at that?

I normally whip out my guitar when I have these mates over and while we're outside having a beer I'll start playing some of my personal favourite Trivium riffs, this always gets them going "sounds cool, who's that?" and I'll say "THAT'S TRIVIUM" and they'll say "Oh. Pfft" and go into the same old argument as to why Trivium isn't real metal or some rubbish like that!

Cheers

If they listen only to oldschool/classic metal bands, they won't listen to new bands like Trivium. Simple. But in my opinion they are ignorant.

I got this a lot from someone I knew and I just pretty much ignore them because trying to explain why trivium is real metal (which they totally are) just doesn't puncture their thick skulls. I try to question them about why old school bands like black sabbath can have singing in their songs but trivium can't scream and sing in their songs but I never get an answer. People who think they know what true metal is are just a bunch of jerks who have no variety.

They are just very closed minded, I grew up playing in metal bands in the 80's[Yes I am older but I don't look it,I also play in a metal band with my son,we are thought of redemption] and I have grown to love a lot of different styles of metal
I love Trivium, our band plays a very similar style and we get the"what kind of metal is that" And I just say "Heavy"
lol!

Everybody has his own opinion how he defines metal and what true metal is. When your friends or another person do not like trivium it's their opinion. You may not like some other metal bands they like, too. Trivium plays his own kind of metal for what we love this band. But it is an extreme reaction from them because it's definitely metal and no pop or hip hop shit. I'm listening to Trivium now for 5 years and for me there is no better metal band !
stay heavy!

There's actually a way to get them to try it without them even knowing. Tell them that you'd like some of their music, an album with a couple of tracks from various artists that they like, and also tell them that you'll give them some good "old stuff" from small fry bands you found in exchange. Then you slip a little bit of Trivium into it (if they're old school you'll want to try putting in some Crusade) and then wait and see. If they say they like it then you can tell them that one of the bands was actually a new wave metal band, and just like that you'll have pulled someone out of the Dark Ages.
If they turn around and say it isn't metal then you can say, with validity, that they're full of shit because they liked it a couple of minutes ago. If nothing else you'll make them look like a shallow fool.
If they don't like it, then at least you tried.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks if it's a fat, blind, deaf quadriplegic that is afraid of progress.

A lot of people for some reason don't want to accept that great music is still being put out today, and don't even give some bands a chance. In my opinion Trivium is a great example of a newer band who is making great music. They create great music, and play what they want, not what other people want them to play. People who don't give them a chance are at a loss. Another band that seems to receive a lot of similar dislike is Disturbed. Disturbed puts out great music too but people call them fake. I don't get it, but it won't stop me from listening to great music.

I agree with Bowbow! When I play any trivium song, people ask me "Oh, what is it? It sounds good." than I say "It's Trivium".
So all my friends say that Trivium is just a copy of Metallica, Pantera, Testament... And say that Trivium is not metal.
I think we have many good metal bands nowadays like Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, All That Remains etc.
Of course they were inspired by the old bands, but they are very great bands too.

I agree with the close mindedness. I listen to a huge percentage of new generation bands but I love older bands too. I think the only way to truly enjoy music at all is to have variety in it.

This sounds like ignorant twats trying to be oldschool, if they havn't listened to trivium much then they can't complain about how they're not "real" metal.
