Song Structures
September 16, 2009 1:57:46 AM UTC Post #1

Okay im pretty much stuck on em. Ive got loads of new riffs for a Covet Chaos song but i cant order a song propperly. Somebody got ideas for me?
What i usually do is take the structure of a Sepulture song and use that. But that cant always work well.

looooool
sorry the sepultura bit made me laugh
erm basically when I write a song structures just kinda leap out at me, riffs feel right in certain places you know
it can take months to properly structure somethin g though, you just try dfifferent permutations, building riffs into each other, looking at the flow that is created
i mean its difficult to help because structures, in my opinion anyway, depend on what the riffs youve got sound like

Try and get lyrics first, then decide how the lyrics should flow. Like if you have 3 verses and a chorus, you may want to have it as
Intro riff
Chorus riff
Intro riff
Verse 1
Interlude riff
Chorus
Postchorus riff
Verse 2
Interlude riff
Chorus
Postchorus riff
Solo background riff
Solo
Postchorus riff
Verse 3
Interlude riff
Chorus
Postchorus riff
Outro
That just came straight off the top of my head, but if you have an idea of how the lyrics will be structured then it's never too hard to think of how to structure the music

Feel free to use that

ooo I never start with lyrics
ever
lol
I work music first always
that structure youve written there elliot would need to be kinda worked on and reworked to ensure it wasnt dull as fuck
like on perhaps one of the repeating chorus you change pitch, add solo, change vocal ideas etc etc
some songs you right dont have any kinda verse corus structure at all
theres a song I wrote which has verses, but no chorus at all
lol
it just really depends on alot of factors
its difficult to give advice on i guess
just keep going see what feels or sounds right to you

I find starting with lyrics is much better, because you can write the music to fit the mood of the song.

Usually my structure pretty much stays the same once I get past the intro of a song...Although sometimes I'll just use a chorus or main riff as the intro, really just depends on how I'm feeling when I'm writing...
Intro (sometimes chrous or main riff)
Main/Verse Riff
Chorus Riff (sometimes I have a pre-chorus riff before the main chorus)
Main/Verse
Chorus
Riff over solo (sometimes I go back to the chrous riff after the solo riff and continue the solo using that)
Main/Verse Riff
Chorus
Outro
Sometimes my songs feel to simplistic and thats when I'll add a pre chrous riff before the chorus and that usually completes the main portion of my idea pretty well

Honestly, once I come up with a riff, normally that leads into another melody, into another riff, into a chord progression, etc. It's a very raw process. Although with no direction, my style therefore is thrown up into the air to instinct, which is completely influenced by my conditioning from the song structures I've heard all my life.

See i dont want that. Thats what my band did for 2 songs and it got hoirrbly bland. I want to take songs somewhere else. And thats why i starfted this thread. I want some diversity in em and things you dont expect. Like my favourite Death album is Spiritual Healing because it is, in my opinion, the album with the best structured songs on.
Its nothing youd expect to be next. All this just happens and theres so much. I find it amazing. Structures are a big part of your song so really try something else.
I myself am struggling with that. Ill end up writing down the structure to the songs on Spiritual Healing and try try something there.

well you can try that, but all im saying is try not to copy shit like that
i dont think chuck sat noting down how tracks made by his fav band was structured, it was probably just a feeling
upload some of the riffs you have (if you can record) and give us the link here and we'll all see what we can do for you
also to the guy that writes the lyrics first, i follow the mood of the track, which is normally dictated by the mood im in while writing, i feel you can be more musically adventurous that way
however it is practice for lots to do it the other way, phil lynnott was a master at this, so if thats your bag keep doing it :D:D

Dan - if you want to have unexpected structures, then sense dictates that it's impossible for us to help you
