I think it just depends on how low your natural voice will go... A deeper natural voice is produced by relaxing your vocal chords and making the gap the air flows through larger, so if you can only get your natural voice so deep, i doubt you can get your growls much lower.

yeah, but I've realized that these growl aint my best. I can make them deeper, but that will take some time. I've heard some say that growling alot makes your natural voice a bit deeper, correct?

It does for me, for a few days after a gig/practise. It just makes your vocal chords looser for a while, but after you've been to sleep a few times they go back to normal. I suppose in the long term it would make them naturally looser though

yeah, that might sound right... thank you all, you've been to much help! I'll post a clip when I'm happy with my vocals again I've started a neo - classical funeral doom (or something like that) project where I'm supposed to growl and sing, and do the guitar duties.. so I'll get some experience there =)

i'm looking at moving away from strictly metal music. i'm planning on forming a new band where i'll be singing. its gonna be a mix of clasic rock and some of the more modern stuff like The Fratelli's and The Killers. The only problem i'm having is that some of these guys sing fucking high. now when i sing the songs, i can hit like, 95% of the notes with very little strain but there are odd times when I sing at the very top of my range and my voice will sqeak one note. it sounds like i'm going through puberty again, lol. is it likely that i'll be able to sing these songs with practice or am i just pushing myself far too far?
incidentally, suggested songs so far are:
Free - All Right Now
Dire Straits - Sultans of swing
Eagles - Hotel California & How Long
Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times (tuned to D standard for this one though)
The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger & Mistress Mabel
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
The ones i'm having difficulty with are The Fratellis, The Killers and How Long by Eagles. Strangely enough i'm having no problems with Hotel California...

One thing you can try to do to extend your range is get your guitar/piano/whatever and play scales, and sing up and down the scale, then shift the scale up a semitone and sing up and down it. Keep shifting the scale up until you start to struggle, then just give up for the day and sing some easier stuff. It's just practise, and gradually stretching your vocal chords until it's more comfortable

QUOTE(Blinded by Fear @ Feb 13 2006, 08:12 PM) You all seem to be talking about improving your screaming, but why? Do you really need to scream to be metal nowadays? Look where Maiden, Metallica, Priest, Sabbath etc got to without screaming.
I'n not saying that screaming is bad, because it's not. However, when bands use only screaming it sounds terrible (to me anyway), so it ought to be combined with ordinary singing.
(Just for the record I don't sing. I'd like to keep everyone's ear drums intact and make sure everybody's windows stay in one piece )
yeh but as awesom as those bands are, theyre not actually that heavy, they were heavy 20 yrs ago, but not now. so, whether yu like screamin or not, it does make everything more gritty and agressive.but i do agree that u need a mixture between the two

why does metal have to be super heavy though? as long as it's good . . .
on top of that, growling does not necessarily make the music "heavier" anyway

Exactly. I growl because i cant sing.
I think its okay to mix the two at certain times. Ive really gone off the metalcore style of doing it. But Cynic are awesome at using the two like they do and so are many bands. But ive really gone off that heavy growling and then melodic singing for the chorus. It feels really expected to me.
