What String Gauges does Matt use?
September 16, 2009 1:57:57 AM UTC Post #1

On Trivium's official site it says under Matt's bio that he uses Dunlop Strings .9-.50 but those gauges aren't listed on Dunlop's site.
So with help from the Ultimate Guitar forums (lol) I've come to the conclusion that it has to either be Dunlop Light Strings or Dunlop Light Heavy Strings with an extra .50 gauge string for the 7th string. I play a 6 string so no need to worry about that.
My question is what kind of Dunlop strings am I getting? Light? Light Heavy? Or is it something else? (others have brought up that Matt's strings might be custom made idk).
Thnx in advance.

He uses 9-42 with a 50 on the 7th, so you'll need a light set.

I've looked EVERYWHERE for the gauges. One of the sole reasons for me joining this forum was to find this out lol,.

So are they FOR SURE 9-42 light?

As for his 6 string guitars, unless it's changed he uses DR 10-50's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sJnPrhn3bU
Didn't Matt say he was using heavy gauge strings during the recording of Shogun, he changed back after the album was done?

I know for a fact he switched over to strictly dunlop strings.
They took Matt of DR's website and he's on dunlop's.
Idk I picked up a pack of 9-42 light and I'm hoping these are right. Either way I have new strings to try later when I switch them in.
My current strings are DR's 10 (or 9 I forget)-52

There's no way they use 9-42's. That's friggin light. I find it difficult doing their riffs on a .48 low E, .50 seems perfect. And there's absolutely no way in HELL a .50 tuned to B would stay in tune.
I always assumed they used 9-50 on standard E and dropped D, and had something like a 56 or a 58 for their low B.

Just try some strings out and see if you like them. There's very little chance you have the exact same playing style and technique as Matt, so there's no reason why you should venture to use the exact same strings as him, as even if you did it wouldn't help you to sound like him.
